Acoustic sensor arrays are typically wired to a central processor, responsible for logging the payload. Becausethere is a need to recover the raw acoustic information in real-time, standard protocols cannot achieve thethroughput requirement. In this work, a low-complexity, low-power communication link is developed to enablecommunication between multiple sensors, and one master controller. A bi-directional communication protocolwith very low overhead is defined, and the payload from the multiple sensor nodes will be routed back usingsimple time division duplexing. Also, during the reverse link, control information will be sent to the sensors.The objective of this project is to optimize the point-to-point link performance using specific front-endrequirements. For this purpose, clock synchronization of the multiple nodes will be required, and the distortionof the signal due to cable bandwidth limitations will be mitigated using adaptive filters. The expertise gainedthroughout this project is at the intersect of information and ocean technologies, two areas of high interest forthe Canadian industry.
