英文摘要
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that envisages the integration and interaction of a plethora of physical objects in a large number of application domains. Wireless communications and in particular cellular wireless communication will play an important role to provide the connectivity required to enable the IoT vision. However, the current cellular technologies such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE) are not sufficient to accommodate the expected wave of IoT-device deployments and their need for wireless services, which come in addition to the fast growing mobile broadband traffic. For this reason, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working towards developing a new communication standard, also referred to as 5G New Radio (NR), which can serve as a platform to support the growing application space of the IoT. In this project, we collaborate with the Canadian wireless IoT leader Sierra Wireless Inc. to develop wireless communication solutions that help enable IoT use cases and contribute to the success of NR standardization. Our research program is closely aligned with challenges and pathways identified in 3GPP NR standardization activities, and focusses on supporting typical IoT scenarios, which are characterized by a large number of connections with small traffic volumes, low cost and energy consumption of wireless communication modules, and low latency of communication. The main thrust of the proposed research is the development of advanced transmission mechanisms for control signals, whose proper design is even more important for IoT than for more traditional mobile broadband communication. The project will train a postdoctoral fellow and two doctoral students in the latest communication technology and its advancement and adaptation to meet new and diverse performance requirements. The close collaboration with our industry partner will ensure that the research results from this project will immediately contribute to the development efforts in the 3GPP community.
