LONG TERM OBJECTIVE - The overall long term objective of my research is to understand the processes controlling nickel, copper, platinum-group elements (PGE), chrome, vanadium, titanium and phosphorus distribution in igneous systems. The study of these elements is used both in fundamental research; considering such problems as how and when the core formed, the effects of meteorite impacts, the formation and segregation of immiscible liquids from silicate magmas, and in applied research developing models for exploration and exploitation of Ni-Cu-PGE and oxide ore deposits. My work covers both aspects but is concentrated on formation of ore deposits.SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES. - My short term objectives for this NSERC cycle is to investigate processes that control PGE distribution in Ni-Cu-PGE deposits and in particular whether the semi-metals play a role in controlling PGE distribution.ORIGINALITY - Although the collection of Ni, Cu and PGE by sulfide liquid is well established the source, the partitioning and role of the semi-metals has not been closely considered. Given that many PGE are found in minerals rich in semi-metals their role in concentrating PGE deserves study. BENEFITS - Four graduate students and one post-doctoral fellow will be trained in ore deposits studies. The role of semi-metals in these types of ore deposits will be more clearly understood and it may be possible to use this information in exploration work.
