The long-term objective of this research program is to improve system-software support for applications and services that people use on a daily basis, to make systems more reliable and secure, to make them easier to build and maintain, and to simplify and empower the user's role in administering the systems they use and in managing the data they store.The first objective is to improve performance and ensure fairness in congested 802.11 wireless networks. We will develop a system that monitors wireless traffic as it traverses a router in the wired part of the network and that alleviates congestion in the wireless network by limiting the aggregate bandwidth the wired network sends to nodes that share overlapping airspace. The second objective is to continue to develop a novel approach to program understanding and debugging in which users perform these tasks by examining execution histories. The system collects and stores vast, high-fidelity traces of system execution and provides a set of language-semantic-based query tools for examining and manipulating this history.The third objective is to build a new type of storage system for modern, personal computing environments in which users access an overlapping set of data on a large number of heterogeneous devices ranging from phones, to computers, to network services. This system will provide users with a single, confederated view of every object they store on any device and will use this view to ensure that an object's identity is preserved when it is copied among devices and that its consistency is preserved when it is modified.
