The proposed research will investigate into cooperative communications and networking (i) to coordinate a cluster of base stations to provide multi-cell cooperation so as to expand the capacity of a single isolated cell and mitigate inter-cell interference in wireless cellular networks, (ii) to enhance signal reception at the destination receiver through cooperative relaying and diversity transmission/reception, while ensuring secure communication by introducing techniques to mitigate intentional and unintentional adversaries, e.g., malicious nodes and eavesdroppers, and (iii) to effect cooperative spectrum access in cognitive radio networks to achieve spectrum and energy efficiencies while satisfying the requirements of licensed or primary users (PUs). The fundamental reason for a source (sender) to engage a third party as partner(s) to relay its signal is because the quality of the direct link from source to destination may be very poor, e.g., either blocked by obstacles in the direct path or faded by impairments inherent in the wireless channel. The long term objective is to develop new and in-depth knowledge towards the construction of a flexible and robust cross-domain information transport platform for handling multimedia services in fixed and mobile environments to facilitate secure end-to-end information transfer in large volumes with QoS provisioning. As building blocks to fulfill the long-term objective, the short term objectives are (i) to investigate techniques in multi-cell cooperative communications that can exploit inter-cell interferences so that each cell in the coordinated cluster has the same per-cell capacity as a single isolated cell, (ii) to propose efficient power control and resource allocation strategies and develop efficient algorithms for implementation of power allocation schemes, (iii) to seek efficient methods for cooperative spectrum access that are spectrum efficient and energy efficient, and (iv) to develop end-to-end control algorithms and secure transmission schemes for information delivery across wireless mesh networks.
