Pyrovac Inc. is a Canadian company based in Quebec which is specialized in the pyrolysis of biomass. As atechnology provider and industrial equipment manufacturer, the company is eager to find new markets for thebiomass-derived pyrolysis products enabled by its pyrolysis process and hence they approached INRS. Typicalpyrolysis of biomass produces a solid phase called biochar and a liquid phase referred to as wood vinegar(WV). WV has a rich biochemical composition which can be exploited. In Quebec, resinous wood is apredominant species and Pyrovac would like to expand usage of its WV natural product in other applicationdomains, such as food applications, biocosmetics or the antimicrobial market. Indeed, antimicrobialapplications represent an unexplored area which has commercial potential and Pyrovac Inc. wishes to explorethis application with INRS-ETE. The main goal of the proposed engage project is the testing of anti-microbialaction of softwood-derived wood vinegar. The project comprises three sub-objectives: a) effect of woodvinegar on different microorganisms; b) determination of the optimum concentration of the wood vinegar foran anti-microbial action; and c) evaluation of anti-microbial effectiveness of the optimized wood vinegardosage.
