The current proposal aims the development and fabrication of electrically variable liquid crystal lenses for 3Ddigitization. Namely, this type of lenses already has been successfully applied to mobile (cell phone) camerasto perform auto focus function without mechanical movements. In the same time, the 3D digitization gainsmore and more attraction along with 3D printers which become broadly accepted in the R&D and prototypingcommunity. One of the techniques, used to perform the 3D digitization, consists in projecting parallel lines onobjects and capturing the resulting images by using several cameras. In current products, the user needs tomove the hand to ensure that the image is in focus. Thus, the goal of this project is the development of liquidcrystal lenses that would ensure that the images are always in focus even in the video mode (in contrast to cellphone's point & shoot application). As part of this project we will try to adapt the lenses that our group hasdeveloped for mobile cameras to this technique of 3D projection that have different technical requirements. Asa result, we shall develop, build, characterize and integrate (in collaboration with our industrial partner)electrically variable liquid crystal lenses for their 3D digitization device.
