英文摘要
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems are sophisticated surveying tools that work by scanning asurface with a pulsed laser beam to create high-resolution topography data. Ground-based LiDAR systems, such as those mounted on tripods, have been used with great success for monitoring open-pit mining operationsand for assessing safety hazards from landslides. There have been recent developments in mobile LiDARscanning systems as well. Here, high-precision topographic data can be collected while traversing terrain in acar, by ATV, or on foot. These techniques have only recently been invented, and the application of thistechnology to geologic field investigations remains in its infancy. Working with Teledyne Optech, we seek toapply two new instruments (the Polaris long-range tripod LiDAR, and the Maverick mobile mapping LiDAR)to field investigations that will create innovative and novel products for the interpretation of geologicprocesses. Our proposed project specifically aims to characterize cold-climate geologic processes that dictatethe morphology of the terrain in the Canadian High-Arctic. Teledyne Optech's company specific problem isthat they lack field studies that demonstrate the utility of these new scanners for scientific geologic research. We will address this problem by providing information about how geoscientists might use these systems, helping them to make technology improvements and open up potential new markets.
