Integrating electrocatalytic carbon reduction with direct air-capture of CO2

Our research group is manufacturing groundbreaking systems to convert air-captured carbon dioxide (CO2)into useful products. Rising CO2 levels are one of the major causes of climate change, and a significantreduction in carbon emissions is crucial to avoiding major economic and environmental catastrophe. CarbonEngineering (Squamish, BC) is commercializing systems to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere on amulti-tonne scale. We will evaluate the feasibility of propagating a carbon value chain through electrocatalyticreduction of CO2 into fuel and material precursors with great economic value. Technology resulting from thiscollaboration has the potential for deep penetration into the $1 trillion-dollar market that is CO2 utilization,positioning both CE and Canada as global leaders in transformative clean technology. This project enables usto fully understand the technical challenges of CO2 capture-conversion integration, and develop our technologyaccordingly.
