Transportation infrastructure, including roads, pipelines, transmission lines and railways, provide necessaryinterconnectivity within the country, and their adequate performance is a matter of continuous monitoring andmaintenance. Transportation infrastructure is exposed to geohazards associated with the varied regions inCanada and the seasonal weather fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. Alberta's mountainous regions,soft ground in the Prairies and steep river valleys contribute to a wide range of geohazards threateningtransportation corridors. Geohazards can lead to excessive deformation of infrastructure, collapse or blockage,and excessive loading on structures which may result in substandard conditions, posing risks to users,environment and transported goods. The proposed research will assess geohazard monitoring technologiesalong transportation corridors in Alberta to develop best practices for implementing monitoring programs.
