Transportation infrastructure, including roads, pipelines, transmission lines and railways, provide necessary interconnectivity within the country, and their adequate performance is a matter of continuous monitoring and maintenance. Transportation infrastructure is exposed to geohazards associated with the varied regions in Canada and the seasonal weather fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. Alberta's mountainous regions, soft ground in the Prairies and steep river valleys contribute to a wide range of geohazards threatening transportation corridors. Geohazards can lead to excessive deformation of infrastructure, collapse or blockage, and excessive loading on structures which may result in substandard conditions, posing risks to users, environment and transported goods. The proposed research will assess geohazard monitoring technologies along transportation corridors in Alberta to develop leading practices for implementing monitoring programs.
