英文摘要
'Smart' structures such as bridges, pipelines, and roadways must incorporate sensors that are designed to tell operators about the health and the performance of the structure. A convenient sensor is comprised of an optical fibre embedded into the structure. Laser light travelling through the fibre suffers measurable changes when the fibre is stressed or twisted, thus providing accurate, live data on the forces which the structure is being subjected to.Algonquin will partner with Oz Optics Inc. in a first time collaboration with the goal of investigating a possible means to enhance the functionality of a fibre stress and temperature sensor currently manufactured by Oz Optics. The project will build a bench-top prototype of a novel fibre-optic system that is capable of measuring simultaneous twist and transverse stress. The device will be based on a technique proposed by Dr. Ilya Golub of Algonquin College. The technique measures changes in linear and circular birefringence and it promises significant commercial advantages compared to existing fibre-optic sensors. In addition to potential applications in smart structures, the method could also be used in pharmacology and biochemistry which utilise similar light-matter interactions that are harnessed in known chemical assays. The project will identify the performance and sensitivity of the system as a first step toward exploring its commercial potential. At the same time, the College will benefit by providing students with hands-on training and exposure to a 'live' company in their field of expertise.
