Multiple investigators in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the Université de Montréal (UdeM) are studying molecular interactions that drive fundamental biological processes, such as replication and repair of DNA, biogenesis of microRNA, evolutionary biology and drug resistance, metabolism of mercury compounds by bacterial enzymes, and the biophysics of protein condensates in cellular organization. Their NSERC-funded research programs train highly-qualified personnel to identify and interrogate the basis of biomolecular interactions, thus providing critical insights into the forces that underlie signaling networks, multi-component complexes, and small-molecule binding events. These research activities provide training in specialized skills that are highly valued in key job sectors such as the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. To fully understand the specificity and dynamics of complex molecular interactions, multiple experimental approaches are required to capitalize on the strengths and mitigate the limitations inherent to each technique.
