This proposal is a sole investigator request for specialized infrastructure to biomechanically stimulate human tendon cells via specific cell surface receptors. The requested equipment incorporates a magnetic force bioreactor, compatible cell culture array plates, and antibody-coated magnetic microbeads. This unique system, developed at Keele university and recently made commercially available through a unique supplier (MICA Biosystems), will allow physiologically relevant mechanical forces to be delivered to tendon cells via cell surface mechanoreceptors. This technology will enable a crucial step forward in understanding the mechanisms of tendon adaptation, which can then be applied in the design of new exercise programs.
