With discoveries like drugs, insecticides, polymers, and food additives, organic chemistry is a powerful science that has helped our modern society enjoy a dramatic increase in life expectancy and standard of living in the past century. The discovery of new drugs and commodity chemicals rely on a continuous input of new reactions, new reagents, and new catalysts (catalysts are species, used in a small amount, that enable and/or accelerate chemical reactions). This RTI grant application describes a proposal to acquire a basic, compact, inert-atmosphere glove box with a refrigerator unit for my laboratory. In organometallic chemistry, ready access to a glove box is crucial in order to develop and optimize new reaction processes using water- and air-sensitive catalysts, ligands, and reactants. Our urgent need for a glove box is acutely exemplified with three ongoing projects in my laboratory involving the development of innovative transition metal-catalyzed borylation reactions to provide new and effective ways to prepare pharmaceutically important intermediates such as polysubstituted piperidines and chiral boronates. Two of these projects, which are currently delayed for lack of a glove box, were at the heart of the P.I.'s recently approved Discovery Grant application and the success of these projects relies on this attendant RTI application for a glove box. This instrument will greatly enhance the training environment of at least 4-5 co-workers in the P.I.'s research group who will develop important technical skills of great importance for employment in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry.
