The present NSERC RTI grant application is for the purchase of a fast infrared (IR) camera for advanced diagnostics in metal fuel combustion. The camera would provide temporally and spatially resolved thermal images of metal fuel flames. The camera would also double as the high-speed detector of an infrared spectrometer, allowing the characterization of gaseous species that emit and absorb in the infrared region, namely water, carbon dioxide, and nitric oxide. More specifically, the camera would be used to obtain the temperature field of a turbulent iron fuel burner that we are developing through the support of a NSERC Strategic Partnerships Grant for Projects. Data obtained from the proposed IR camera will be used to improve the performance of the burner. Furthermore, the camera will be used to perform fundamental studies of metal flames using the heated counterflow burner that produces one-dimensional, flat metal flames. The studies will include the characterization of nitric oxide emissions, the thermal structure of the flame, as well as the flame thickness. These data are essential to further our understanding of the fundamental combustion properties of metal fuels.
