Geo-systems such as landfill barriers and reinforced embankments are typically expected to function for many decades to many centuries. However, unless we change our designs, some of these systems are unlikely to have the desired long-term performance. The proposed research involves computer and physical modelling and the development of design methods focused on optimizing the long-term performance of both geoenvironmental engineering systems, such as waste disposal facilities and geosynthetic barriers for the containment of contaminants of emerging environmental concern, and geotechnical engineering systems such as geosynthetic reinforced embankments constructed over difficult soils.
