Biofuel and renewable chemical production utilizing non-food crops and woody material will bring about significant reduction in green house gas emissions, improve possibilities of employment in cleaner-greener industries, reduce costs of importing fossil based fuels and make use of locally available biomass resources in countries like Canada, etc. The innovative research proposed will endeavor to overcome the major bottlenecks and make second generation bioethanol from lignocellulosic residues economically feasible and demonstrate production of some platform chemicals from renewable biomass which will serve as precursors to a number of useful materials as an alternate to finite petro-based products.
