Molecular sieves as adsorbents, separation and purification agents, catalysts and more, touch our daily lives. The proposed program will generate new molecular sieves and develop new applications for their use. Presently, extremely energy intensive cryogenic methods are used to purify ethane and ethylene. We have discovered and developed adsorbents to harvest ethane from natural gas and separate ethylene from ethane. We propose to continue developing geomorphic molecular sieve membranes to separate hydrogen from mixtures and clean oil sands process waters. We are also developing molecular sieve surfaces which template nanometer-sized metal clusters to develop new adsorbents, catalysts and antimicrobial agents.
