A new synthetic methodology will be developed for the preparation of crystalline solid state materials known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This protocol will be used to create MOFs with unique structural features, properties and applications. Some examples include: 1) ultra-high, porosity for gas storage, 2) flexible frameworks to act as sponge-like storage materials for sorption of small molecules, 3) easily accessible, sites to insert reactive metal centres for catalysis and 4) cavities imprinted with enough free volume to allow large amplitude motion and the creation of solid-state, molecular switches.
