Modern electric grids need to respond to more stringent demands for a secure and sustainable electric supply. They will be required to integrate renewable energy sources, manage loads to maximize generation and distribution infrastructure usage, and increase the efficiency of the operation. More intelligence in the electricity grid operation and equipment will be introduced by means of advanced power electronic interfaces, sensing and communication for monitoring and control purposes, and information and data management systems. The gradual integration of new technologies into existing and new installations will result in a more flexible, efficient and sustainable electricity grid.
