Modern electrical power generation and delivery systems are a key source of energy for our modern industrialized society. Expectations related to security, quality, reliability and availability are increasing as electrical loads are becoming more critical and demanding, including complex industrial processes and data warehouses. Meeting these requirements is made more difficult by generation and transmission expansion, including the integration of distributed generation into electrical distribution systems. To meet expectations, new effective, reliable and fast acting fault monitoring and detection systems are constantly being developed. This proposal deals with the development of intelligent monitoring and protection devices based on advanced multi-parameter analysis and detection schemes. The proposed intelligent approach uses, among other advanced tools, the data-mining methodology to extract information from the large data sets of critical indices obtained by off line screening of massive event analyses produced by network simulations. This methodology is applied in protection devices in both the distribution and transmission systems. In distribution systems, the approach is used to detect distributed generation islanding. It combines a number of system parameters in order to detect islanding for many possible network topologies, distributed generation penetration levels, and operating conditions. In transmission systems, the approach is applied to monitor the condition of a transmission system, particularly under conditions of stress, and alert the system operator of violations that may cause system collapse. The new protection devices are expected to increase the effectiveness fault monitoring and detection and therefore improve critical aspects of the operation of transmission and distribution systems.
