Today, computer systems from simple desktop PCs or even cell phones to high-performance computer clusters rely on parallel processing power. Significant speedups are mostly gained by an increase in the parallelism provided by hardware. Computer programs that exploit this parallelism must deal with the inherent asynchrony and faulty behaviour of the system. Probabilistic software, where processors make random decisions, has proved useful to overcome problems created by asynchrony and faultiness. The goal of this research program is to build a theory of probabilistic algorithms for concurrent computation, which will be the foundation for the design of more efficient concurrent software.
