Number theory is often called the queen of mathematics. Once thought of as the purest of the theoretical sciences, it has played an important role in the computer revolution. In particular, advanced theoretical results from number theory are driving many of the recent developments in the areas of information transmission and cryptography. My work in recent years, much of it in collaboration with John Coates of Cambridge University, has led to the creation of a new area of modern number theory non-commutative Iwasawa theory. Our approach holds the promise of unlocking deeply held secrets such as the famous Birch and Swinerton-Dyer conjecture.
