Quantum Materials are electronic materials in which strong interactions between electrons lead to new electronic behavior, different from that found in conventional metals, semiconductors, magnets, and superconductors. For example, the cuprate materials which support the highest temperature superconducting state currently known, exhibit "strange metal" and "pseudogap" phases. In even more exotic cases, the electron spin and charge might move separately, as happens in carbon nanotubes and, possibly, in some frustrated magnets. Understanding such materials at a microscopic level is important, both because of the possibility of new electronic devices in the future and also because understanding such new phenomena leads to new paradigms of physical behavior which can apply to other materials, as well as to other areas of physics and science.
