The purpose of this research will be to explore the mechanical properties of light, and to develop new types of sensitive micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) controlled by photons. In particular, I am interested in realizing mechanical devices supported primarily by optical forces, thereby replacing the traditional MEMS materials with light. Such devices will in principle overcome material limitations and achieve unprecedented mechanical coherence (e.g. ringing coherently for weeks when struck). As a result, they should be capable of exhibiting coherent quantum motion, achieving sub-zeptonewton force sensitivity, and detecting the mass of a single proton.
