Our modern understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties of solids is the driving force behind new technologies that range from data storage and manipulation in computers to energy storage in rechargeable batteries. It has become increasingly apparent that progress in developing new devices relies upon a deeper understanding of how electrons interact in solids in a highly correlated fashion. These "Quantum Materials", such as high temperature superconductors, multiferroics, and unusual magnets, are providing challenges to the condensed matter community which involve new perspectives and techniques. On a more fundamental level, there is a growing need for high quality single crystals of these materials, and continued research at the boundary of chemistry and physics that is required in Quantum Materials Discovery. An investment in materials synthesis expertise through this Canada Research Chair is essential for keeping Canada at the forefront of this field and for making future discoveries that will ultimately stimulate our economy through innovation.
