The main goal of my research is to understand the fundamental principles governing the coexistence of and interactions between different properties in nanostructured materials. Simultaneous control and manipulation of multiple functionalities (optical, electrical, magnetic) could lead to radically new approaches to material- and energy-efficient information technologies, lighting devices and catalysis. This program has several directions aimed at discovering, understanding and controlling the unique aspects of nanomaterials which can be used to introduce and tune the properties which are often considered to be mutually exclusive. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and uses a combination of synthetic, physical, spectroscopic and theoretical methods.
