Freshwater ecosystems are among the most valuable natural resources, and yet are challenged globally by multiple stressors including excess nutrient loading and climate change. Through a novel combination of field experiments and syntheses of large datasets, the proposed program will quantify how aquatic communities have responded to multiple stressors over different time scales and identify factors that make freshwater ecosystems susceptible to abrupt changes in condition. Overall, findings will elucidate how freshwater systems have responded to the accelerating rates of change introduced by human activities over the past two centuries and inform conservation priorities and actions.
