Freshwater ecosystems are experiencing an unprecedented combination of changes caused by climate warming. One of the greatest physical changes at mid- and high-latitudes is the shortening of seasonal ice cover and the accompanied changes in snow accumulation and watershed vegetation. Shifts in under-ice ecological processes have year-round repercussions on primary productivity, food availability for higher organisms and greenhouse gas emissions. As Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Polar Aquatic Ecology, Dr. Milla Rautio will focus on seasonally ice-covered ecosystems with the overall aim to improve our understanding of physical and biogeochemical conditions during winter and their effects on aquatic microbial and planktonic life.
