The evolutionary tree of species is life's genetic history. Because genetics are so powerful in explaining the characteristics of organisms, this evolutionary tree is central to our interpreting information about organisms, from structure and physiology to genomics. I will develop novel quantitative methods that analyze the tree of life, and implement them in widely-used computer programs. I will also apply them to spiders to understand their diversity and evolution, revealing general evolutionary processes. To gather data for this research, I will discover and document new species, and find their places in the evolutionary tree using modern genetic approaches.
