Agricultural production is projected to expand during the 21st century, in order to fulfil the requirements for plant biomass for food, feed, and biofuels, and due to increasing foreign market demands for meat. Understanding the environmental impact of agricultural systems is increasingly important to ensure ecosystem sustainability while maintaining productivity and minimizing the impact on soil health, air and water quality. The proposed research program will provide new knowledge linking microbial processes with key soil ecosystem services, including, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, and water quality. Findings from this program may allow us to estimate the environmental footprint of agro-ecosystems.
