Dr. Glen Tibbits, a Tier I CRC in Molecular Cardiac Physiology at Simon Fraser University, is exploring the molecular and cellular basis of heart function in teleost fish and newborn infants. He will investigate the molecular design of teleost hearts to determine how they function in the cold, but become dysfunctional at warmer temperatures. His research on congenital heart disease in newborn infants will probe the genetic basis of abnormal heart growth that causes irregular heart beat and pronounced arrhythmias. He will examine the role of these arrhythmias in Sudden Unexpected Death, which can occur in infancy through early adulthood.
