Our research provides unique and novel anatomical and functional data on the brain regions necessary for motor learning and movement and sheds new light on the molecular mechanisms whereby synaptic plasticity exerts control on motor function and learning. During the past 4 years, we have published 17 papers in peer-reviewed journals establishing among other things, that stabilized neuronal connections in the striatum are the foundation of a durable motor memory and that molecular elements of the corticostriatal circuitry mediating the initial learning of a skill or action are different than those mediating overtrained skills or habitual actions.
