The proposed research deals with investigations of design practices of high-sensitivity antenna-array receiver and radiometer systems. The focus will be on identification of and accounting for all impediments to system sensitivity during design. The theoretical analysis of noise in antenna arrays and the resultant design insights will be verified experimentally with antenna-array systems demanding highly sensitive receivers for GPS systems and the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope (SKA), which is an international mega project. The feasibility of designing sensitive antenna arrays at sub-THz frequencies will be evaluated with a proof-of-concept design of the Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope heterodyne array instrument.
