Fuel cells are clean and highly efficient (> 90%) power generation devices that convert fuels directly into electrical energy. However, to improve durability and lower cost, we will develop several novel approaches to better utilize and stabilize costly catalytic nanoparticles and their support materials. We will also seek to make fuel cell materials more resistant to coke and sulphur poisoning, develop a deeper mechanistic understanding of these processes, and will modify fuel cell material composition and design for enhanced CO2 capture. We will also optimize a highly promising, biocompatible, implantable glucose sensor (for diabetics) under development.
