Borage, also known as 'the Bee Plant,' is emerging as a commercial oilseed crop in Canada. Borage seed oil**contains 20-25% of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and is the highest known plant-based source of GLA. GLA**has many health benefits and has been widely used as a general health supplement. With conventional breeding**methods, Bioriginal Food & Science Corporation (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Bioriginal thereafter) has**developed high quality borage cultivars and is now in the process of further improving them. For rapid and**targeted breeding, Bioriginal is interested in establishing a high-throughput and non-destructive method for**lipid analysis and use it to analyze borage cultivars. As a Canada Research Chair in Plant Lipid Biotechnology,**Dr. Chen at the University of Alberta has rich experience in plant lipid analysis and his lab is well established**for lipid analysis and oilseed biotechnology. This Engage project will bridge relations between Bioriginal and**the Chen laboratory to achieve the above goals. The results will be valuable for further improving the borage**cultivars in Bioriginal and beneficial to Canada's agricultural industry. The studies will support a highly**qualified postdoctoral fellow.
