Major emission source of criteria air pollutants (CAPs) including nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metal, and sulfur oxides (SOx) are detrimental to the ambient air quality, and they can cause immediate and serious damage to the public safety and health. Therefore, it is essential to have the state of art monitoring system to timely report the pollutant emission levels and assess the impacts on the air quality and the risks of human exposure. However, current air monitoring is facing new challenges as the emission cap regulation in Canada and worldwide is getting more strict and require better monitoring coverage and real-time monitoring with large volume of data, this also brings new data analysis challenges. Particularly, one of the largest industries in Canada in air sampling, monitoring and management, Consul-Air Inc., is facing these challenges and is currently in an urgent need of advancing its technology and services on air emission and ambient air quality management to further extend its business globally. Based on the same R&D interests and complementary expertise between Consul-Air and the applicant's Lab, this partnership project explores cost-effective IoT (Internet of Things)-based air pollution monitoring system developed based on microprocessor and micro sensors. The environmental parameters selected to be monitored include the major CAPs, meteorological conditions as well as noises at the site, which are transmitted to the server in real time. Professionals and decision makers can assess the environmental impacts of the ongoing site condition and track what pollutants the human is exposed to and take actions to protect public or workers from harms in a timely manner. The proposed system will be tested and validated at real industrial sites in Canada together with Consul-Air Inc. The results can be also further employed to advance new air quality assessment and prediction techniques. ******
