This research builds on the experience of the researcher in spatial data infrastructure, crowdsourcing and mapping systems to address the developed world's next important mapping frontier - the indoors. So much more than just the creation of electronic floorplans, this work will refine the technologies and invent the processes required to rapidly but routinely collect the data required to create accurate and comprehensive 3D representations of the inside of major retail and institutional facilities - and then keep them up to date. ** By developing and testing the components of rapid indoor mapping systems, the results of this research can be employed by a new generation of mapping professionals undertaking the massive initial data collection and ongoing (potentially crowdsourced) updating efforts in indoor facilities. This will result in new mobile services that will benefit both consumers (e.g., receiving directions to specific products inside a building, or indoor navigation assistance if you are visually impaired) and facility owners (enhanced product placement and better customer satisfaction by deploying resources only where & when required).** The short-term objectives of research proposed here will focus on developing key system components which will: (1) allow the formal definition of the production workflow and data management processes; and (2) identify the institutional issues involved in the rapid autonomous 3D mapping of indoor features and their attributes in large commercial and institutional settings. Research team members will develop standards-based components, production workflows, and test processes which will merge actively-collected data from unmanned systems and passive contributions from people & objects operating in an indoor environment.** The longer term goal of this research is to examine and demonstrate how - employing cloud-based mobile services and contributions from specialty suppliers and social networks - individuals may create, maintain and employ their own personal spatial data infrastructures to spatially enable their daily activities and transactionally update and upgrade the databases driving these services. ********
