BC Research Inc. (BCRI), with its parent company NORAM Engineering and Constructors, have developed a**proprietary process to isolate and purify lignin from black liquor generated from the Kraft pulping process. The**lignin isolated from this process has significant potential as a new high-value product for Canadian pulp mills.**They are seeking ways to incorporate this high quality lignin into new commercial products. This proposal**seeks to incorporate lignin in adhesive formulations. Two approaches have been identified as promising: a**starch-based adhesive formulation via a water-based process, and as a component in pressure-sensitive**adhesive (PSA) formulations via free-radical polymerization techniques. Starch-based adhesives are commonly**used in corrugated cardboard and packaging applications while PSA products include labels, tapes, and**protective films. The motivation of the project is to not only illustrate the use of lignin as a value-added**product but to displace traditional petroleum-based components with a bio-based resource.**The uOttawa polymer reaction engineering research facilities are uniquely suited to the synthesis,**characterization and end-product testing of adhesives. Prof. Dubé and his team of researchers are**well-experienced in multicomponent emulsion polymerization, nanocomposite production, polymer**characterization and adhesive property testing.**
