My research team invents techniques that enable scientists and engineers to find interesting and useful patterns in large data sets. In particular, we use our methods to reveal genetic codes that control previously unknown biological processes within human cells, and to discover new ways to treat genetic disease. Also, our techniques allow us to make new discoveries about biological and non-biological computation, such as the mechanics of learning to interpret visual scenes. This work, unique within Canada and internationally, will enable scientists and engineers to better understand our world and develop tools to improve it.
