This project will assess the potential for a new class of triggerable polymers to be used in the manufacture of**pharmaceutical capsules. The selective release of drugs in the colon has been a target of increasing interest in**recent years due to its potential to improve the treatment of local diseases such as Crohns disease, irritable**bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, and to meet the needs associated with fecal transplant**technologies. However, targeting the colon with drugs is challenging as it is located at the end of the**gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is affected by challenges such as variability in pH, transit times, and fluid volumes.**Combined, the academic and company project teams have developed a system for the manufacture of**pharmaceutical capsules by injection molding, a technique commonly applied to the processing of plastics, and a**polymer that shows promise for specific degradation at defined locations in the GI tract. The proposed project will**involve the development and optimization of the polymer for degradation under colic conditions while achieving**suitable properties for processing by injection molding.
