Ontology-driven data governance**

Many applications in the domains of e-commerce, e-government, and e-science require the semantic integration of a wide variety of datasets and semantic interoperability among diverse software systems and services. The necessity for software applications to interoperate has become crucial to the conduct of business and operations in organizations. The development of ontologies has been proposed as a key technology to support semantic integration. Ontologies are logical theories that provide a set of terms together with a computer-interpretable specification of the meanings of the terms in some formal logical language. Ontologies support the semantic integration of software systems through **a shared understanding of the terminology in their respective ontologies.****In collaboration with RBC, we propose three projects that will support data governance using ontologies for the financial domain. The projects will focus on semantic integration, annotation of financial software, and data quality. The first year will focus on the development of financial ontologies**to support RBC uses cases, while the second year will focus on techniques for applying these ontologies -- semantic integration, ontology evaluation, and automated reasoning.****
