Teck Resources is Canada's largest diversified resource company, the world's third largest Zn producer and it**operates a Zn smelting and refining facility in Trail, BC. Improving the energy efficiency and lowering the**operating costs for Zn electrowining are of great interest to the company. The present proposal is focused on**the evaluation and testing of novel oxygen evolution anode catalysts developed by Dr. Gyenge's laboratory at**UBC, in order to lower the energy consumption and to reduce the chloride content in the Zn electrowinning**process. The test conditions are designed such that to be directly relevant for the Zn electrowinning process**with special emphasis on the stability of the anode catalysts. The outcome of this project will provide a better**understanding of the longer-term activity and stability of diverse metal oxide anode catalysts and their potential**applicability in the industrial process. This work is also important in the effort to support the technological**advancement of one of Canada's world-leading companies in the area of mineral processing. Furthermore, the**project also provides an excellent training opportunity for highly qualified personal in the fields of**electrocatalyst preparation, metals recovery, electrochemical testing and catalyst surface characterization**methods.
