The testing and certification of gas turbines demand the well-controlled environment provided by an engine test cell. MDS Aero develops and supplies test facilities and test systems for aviation, industrial and marine gas turbines. In many of these systems, the flow generated noise of the gas turbine and the characteristic frequencies of the system enter into a resonant coupling, with possible deleterious effects. This aeroacoustic coupling has a direct impact on the quality and reliability of the engine testing and certification. To predict the onset and mitigate the aeroacoustic coupling in engine test cells, we seek to use high-fidelity numerical tools in order to understand the physical characteristics of the aeroacoustic noise generation and coupling in order to inform the development of a low-order aeroacoustic model. As part of this effort, the Multi-Physics Interaction lab at the University of Waterloo will numerically study the acoustic noise generation of a partially confined jet undergoing a re-acceleration through the ejection system. The researchers will use the knowledge gleaned from the simulations to improve on a low-order aeroacoustic model to predict resonant acoustic modes resulting from the geometry and compound chocking in the flow. This model will allow the company to predict to within +/-20 % the frequency and amplitude of the coupling phenomena. This NSERC-funded project will permit the training and mentoring of three highly-qualified personnel for careers in science and technology within Canada.**
