英文摘要
Optical fibre communications are by far the most effective technology for long-distance exchange of information, once that information can be coupled onto the fibre as light pulses which are controllable, stable, and bright, and very narrow in time and wavelength. Light pulses of many different closely-spaced wavelengths can be transmitted simultaneously, if they are all the right wavelengths to be spectrally resolved at the receiver. These wavelengths are pre-defined by standards. Solid-state lasers on microchips can produce very bright beams of a size readily coupled to optical fibre, but controlling the wavelength precisely to standard is difficult, and so is controlling the laser wavelength at will across the full range of standard wavelengths.****Fortunately, nanophotonics provides in principle a tool enabling the laser to emit light across a wide wavelength band simultaneously. Thereafter, a second device (not part of this proposal) can be controlled to pick out the desired standard wavelength at will. Quantum dots provide capability to engineer the laser bandgap to support lasing over a wide wavelength range. Expertise to design, model, and test laser structures with grown-in quantum dots is well established at uOttawa. The proposed project will formalize such capability into a portable numerical model, running on established commercial software engines, and verify it against known structures.** ******
