Innovative approaches to agriculture production will minimize a host of current challenges including land scarcity, misuse of fertilization, soil and water contamination and land-use change. These challenges are magnified by globalization processes and often exclusionary management. This research program will shed light on biophysical and human contributions to changing agricultural ecosystems in Canada and in developing countries. We will achieve this by investigating the efficiency of nutrient cycles and the performance of plants in alternative agroecological systems while simultaneously charting the human dimension of agroecosystem management. This approach is critical for highly productive yet sustainable landscapes in Canada and sound management practices for agriculture in the developing world.
