These devices can tell us our schedule on the way to work, help navigate to a meeting point in an unfamiliar area, and deliver us messages even when we are not in our office. Mobile devices have become essential for our daily life in many situations. Yet, their interface currently does not fully support safe interactions in multitasking environments. ******The goal of this proposal is to develop interaction techniques to support rich and subtle, yet safe gesture interaction for multitasking environments. In multitasking environments, gesture interaction while walking, exercising, or even while driving is expected to provide a safe input modality as an eyes-free interface. A significant body of work has already explored hand and finger gesture interactions as input modality but many questions remain open. How does eyes-free gesture interaction affect safety in a multitasking environment? How does cognitive load from other tasks affect the effectiveness and precision of the gesture? What can the system do to support safe and efficient eyes-free interaction in a multitasking environment? ******The research supported under this proposal will investigate direct links between the human computer interaction and the safety level in the multitasking environment, as well as propose and test interaction techniques that can be used safely in multitasking environments. In particular, the research team will explore tactile feedback and physical guidance supported eyes-free finger gesture interaction with focus on using wearable personal devices including but not limited to on-skin wearable sensors. In the long term, this research will open the area of direct safety assessment of mobile computation devices in multitasking environments. The proposed research will address these objectives by exploring the following areas:******1) Rich and robust gesture input recognition for multitasking environments***2) Tactile feedback and physical guidance to support rich eyes free gesture interactions in multitasking environments***3) Safety measurement for gesture interaction in multitasking environments******The research output will enable the design of rich gestural interface to interact with computing devices safely in multitasking environments.**
