Biolargo has been developing a novel electrochemical technology for water disinfection, termed advanced**oxidation system (AOS). The packing material of the AOS is the result of continuous development of the**graphene-based electrodes over the last four years. Disinfection processes are used to effectively control**microbial pathogens (and their high health risks). However, these treatment methods carry unintentional**consequences: they react with natural and anthropogenic constituents to possibly form disinfection by-products**(DBPs) that pose a potential health problem caused by long-term exposure. Iodine-based oxidants produced by**the AOS may lead to the formation of iodinated DBPs. However, the formation or degradation of iodinated**DBPs remains largely unknown. Process optimization and improvement of equipment design and materials**require increased knowledge on the formation of iodinated DBPs. This research project will evaluate the**formation of target and untargeted DBPs produced from pure and environmentally relevant waters treated by**the AOS. The pursuit of this initiative will help a Canadian start-up company to develop critical technology for**water purification providing Biolargo a competitive edge in the market that will positively contribute to the**Canadian economy.
