Sediment transport in rivers is a common concern for water resources managers and engineers as it can lead to failure of engineering structures if insufficiently accounted for (e.g., bridge failure due to pier scour). Many commonly used CFD codes incorporate sediment transport modules, which can be used along with standard flow calculations. In general, the strengths and weaknesses of CFD sediment transport models have not been fully assessed for their accuracy in modeling rivers. J.F. Sabourin et associés inc. (JFSA) has expertise in 1D and 2D hydrodynamic modeling and would like to broaden this expertise to three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and in particular to projects involving sediment transport. ****The principal objective of the proposed project is to demonstrate and compare the implementation of currently available sediment transport models in several CFD codes (e.g., OpenFOAM, FLOW-3D, Delft3D). Model validation will initially be performed in a small-scale experimental flume and subsequently take advantage of the unique field data set collected by JFSA in 2018 from the Castle River.****This collaboration between JFSA and UdeS will provide insights into how CFD codes can be effectively employed for complex hydrotechnical projects involving sediment transport in river systems. The knowledge gained will enable JFSA to bid on previously unattainable projects and allow JFSA to be more competitive in its bid thus promoting its future viability. Assuring the competitiveness of Canadian owned companies like JFSA is thus in the interest of Canada and Canada's economy.**
